Zoox Exemption Narrows NHTSA's Oversight of Autonomous Driving Systems
Zoox, Amazon's autonomous vehicle unit, received the first NHTSA commercial exemption for a passenger-carrying robotaxi without steering wheel or pedals, allowing up to 2,500 vehicles annually through July 2028. The exemption clears federal safety hurdles for paid service starting in Las Vegas, though state approvals remain required. Tesla's Cybercab, still in testing, now trails a competitor in securing federal commercial deployment clearance.
